Al-pucker up! It's Valentine's Day

  • News Animals

Love was in the air this week at Woburn Safari Park, as our keepers celebrated Valentine's Day with the animals across the Foot and Road Safari!

Over at Alpaca Outpost, the herd curiously checked out their very own 'kissing booth', but were far more interested in the yummy veggies and plenty of hay keepers had provided for them to enjoy.

While they ate, keepers were delighted as from where the herd had been standing, it looked like they were behind the booth ready to al-pucker up! No alpacas were kissed during this Valentine's Day fun, but the herd were very curious about the cardboard frame and enjoyed plenty of tasty treats during this impromptu photoshoot.

Love at first flight

Love was also in the air in Rainbow Landing, as Eugene the Rainbow Lorikeet enjoyed their very own heart-shaped butternut squash cleverly crafted by Keeper Olly. This species also feeds on flowers, pollen, nectar, seeds and insects. They also use their brush-tipped tongue to reach pollen, while the tip of the tongue has hairy projections (called papillae) that soak up nectar.

Workshop students get involved

Our half-term Holiday Workshop students have been busy creating all sorts of lovely enrichment for the animals to celebrate Valentine's Day, with the help of our dedicated Education Team.

Check out these beetroot 'hearts' which they carefully carved out for the red-necked wallabies to enjoy, down in Australian Walkabout!

Find out more about our half-term Holiday Workshops, where kids 8-17 can learn about the different species and help provide care for the animals, as well as exploring the reserves and getting to see areas of the park the general public is not allowed to go.

Or head over to Rainbow Landing in the Foot Safari, where you can see free-flying rainbow lorikeets and dusky lories as you walk amongst them.
