Monkey Mayhem is filled with excitement as it welcomes its newest resident, a four-year-old Guianan squirrel monkey named Murphy! Murphy joined the park from Colchester Zoo on Sunday, 16th May 2024, and he’s already making himself at home.
To ensure a smooth transition, Murphy initially stayed in a private section of the Monkey Mayhem enclosure, allowing him to get used to his surroundings and the troop of 20 squirrel monkeys. Gradual introductions were essential for these highly social primates, Murphy was introduced to members from the troop small groups at a time and protected while keepers watched closely. Since then, Murphy has settled in beautifully. He’s already formed close bonds with two female troop members, Gizmo and Jammy Dodger.
Although Murphy started off shy, hesitating around keepers and taking time to adjust, he has blossomed into a confident and sweet monkey. Keepers are now seeing his true personality shine through, with Animal Keeper Ruby describing him as “the sweetest monkey ever.”
A Step Forwards in Squirrel Monkey Conservation
Murphy’s arrival is part of an important Studbook breeding recommendation, bringing exciting possibilities for the future of Monkey Mayhem. With hopes of hearing the pitter-patter of tiny paws in the future, Murphy’s addition is a big step forward in Woburn Safari Park’s efforts to conserve Guianan squirrel monkeys.
As an accredited member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), Woburn Safari Park plays an active role in the conservation of endangered species. Murphy’s arrival is a vital part of this mission, ensuring a brighter future for these charismatic primates.
