Woburn Safari Park has become home to two 4 month old emus! The male and female pair have arrived from Merrist Wood College in Surrey and are called Bruce and Sheila!
When they first arrived, the young pair were only 2ft tall but are now measuring an impressive 4.5ft! They will keep growing until they reach adulthood at around 12-14 months old. With all this growing, their varied diet is very important for providing them all the essential nutrients they need and includes a special emu pellet mix as well as grapes, cabbage, pear, apple and mixed corn!
As the emus are currently difficult to tell apart, keepers are paying attention to other differences like their big personalities! Bruce is much more inquisitive than Sheila and loves nothing more than to watch his lemur neighbours through the fence separating their enclosures. They also love to get involved with keepers entering the enclosure and are particularly curious about their cleaning routines!
As the pair continue to grow, they will become more accustomed to seeing visitors and will be moved to the Australian Walkabout section of the Foot Safari. Here, guests will be able to get up close to Bruce and Sheila in the walk-through and the pair will benefit from having lots of wallaby neighbours to interact with!
For now, you can catch a glimpse of Sheila and Bruce in the side enclosure adjoining the Land of the Lemurs. Keep checking our social media channels and website for updates on the pair, as they grow!
