The Bedford Estates, LondonWoburn welcomes a Dwarf forest buffalo calf for the first time in over a decade.
Woburn Safari Park is buzzing with excitement after a very special surprise, the arrival of a baby dwarf forest buffalo! Born on 3rd May 2026, this little bundle of joy is the first in over 10 years, making her debut a truly extraordinary event for the Park.
This new arrival came as a surprise to the keeper team, first time mother, Cadbury, arrived from a different collection at the end of 2025, little did the team know she did not arrive solo. “This was a pleasant surprise for the team, we were not expecting a calf with this group. Dwarf forest buffalo are a critically endangered species, making this birth a positive and success towards conservation’ – Tom Robson, Head of Reserves.
The newborn, wasted no time getting on her feet, though her legs were still finding their rhythm, she was exploring her home almost immediately after birth, and while the rest of the herd welcomed her with plenty of curiosity and attention, she’s already fitting right in under the watchful eye of mum Cadbury, who is now feeding and bonding with her calf.
The buffalo herd have been keeping a close eye on the tiny newcomer, with some even trying to mother her themselves, while attentive first-time mum Cadbury ensures her calf gets the best start in life. Keepers are also monitoring the other curious Road Safari animals, including the zebras and rhinos.
Dwarf forest buffalo are fascinating creatures: small, sturdy, and perfectly adapted to their forest habitats, with backward-swept horns to avoid branch entanglements and protect their foreheads during playful sparring. At Woburn, visitors can see these rare buffalo roaming alongside Grevy’s zebras, Southern white rhinos, and eland in the expansive Savannah Grasslands.
