Three New Buffalo Join the Park

There’s a buzz of excitement in the Savannah Grasslands at Woburn Safari Park, and it’s all thanks to three brand-new arrivals! Say hello to Daisy, December, and Kindu, a lovely trio of Dwarf Forest Buffalo who made the journey from Knowsley Safari Park on 6th August.

These three young females are settling in well, and keepers are thrilled to introduce them to their new home and to you!

Meet the girls!

Daisy is the baby of the group, born on 19th December 2023. She’s the smallest and tends to follow the others as she finds her feet. So far, keepers have mostly seen her shadowing the rest of the herd members, while her confidence grows and she gets used to her new surroundings.

December, born just a few days earlier on 6th December, is equally petite. You’ll spot her easily thanks to a dark stripe running down her neck, a little detail that makes her stand out in the crowd.

Kindu, the eldest of the trio, was born on 8th March 2023 and is the largest and boldest of the bunch. With a darker coat and long hair around her ears and neck, she’s a confident girl who’s already showing signs of taking the lead in her new herd.

Life at Woburn

On 7th August, the three new buffalo took their first steps into the Road Safari, with keepers watching closely as they explored their new home. At first, the trio stayed quite reserved, seeking the comfort of a shady tree while they sized up their surroundings and met the resident herd.

It didn’t take long for their confidence to grow, venturing further afield and mingling with their new neighbours and settling into safari life. All three new arrivals have fallen in line behind resident matriarch Anastasia who now leads the herd.

If you’re not too familiar with Dwarf Forest Buffalo, you’re not alone; they’re often one of the more overlooked species, but they’re truly fascinating animals. Native to the rainforests of Central and West Africa, they’re known for their strong herd bonds and unique curled horns, which are great for navigating dense forests. And if threatened? These little powerhouses are known to stick together and charge as one, a pretty impressive defence strategy!
