The animals at Woburn Safari Park have been celebrating in style this Christmas! From ‘Christmas crackers’ to Secret Santa surprises, the residents have had a very merry and enriching festive season.
Festive Fun on the Road Safari
Animals on the Road Safari got stuck into their Christmas enrichment! The Barbary macaque troop chomped through their “Christmas dinner” of Brussels sprout stalks, while the lions and bears explored Christmas crackers made by keepers. These crackers, scented to stimulate their senses, provided plenty of fun and encouraged natural behaviours.
Over in the camel enclosure, the festive cheer continued as the camel herd received their own special “presents” of Brussels sprout stalks. Wasting no time, they tore into their ‘Christmas dinner’, chomping away at the seasonal treat!
It’s ‘Snowing'
The Asian elephant herd also joined in the holiday cheer. Keepers turned bales of sawdust into festive “presents” for the elephants to investigate. True to their nature, they stomped on the bales and made it “snow” by tossing sawdust over themselves in a delightful display of natural dust-bathing behaviour. After the excitement, the herd could be spotted enjoying the festive atmosphere, dusted in their sawdust!
Foot Safari Festivities
The Christmas spirit extended to the smaller residents of the Foot Safari too! In the Land of Lemurs, Brussels sprout stalks provided both fun and a yummy Christmas treat. The Middle White pigs in Farmyard Friends celebrated their first Christmas with hampers stuffed with tasty treats, while the meerkat mob eagerly climbed into their own hampers filled with food and sprouts, enjoying their family feast.
Over in the Birds in Action arena, the parrot flock enjoyed their own Christmas surprise, with a special secret santa activity. Read all about their festive fun
Enrichment with Care
While the animals enjoyed their festive treats, keepers ensured every activity met the highest welfare standards. The enrichment was designed to promote natural behaviours while keeping to the animals dietary needs, allowing them to have a safe and fun holiday celebration.
