Overview

At Woburn Safari Park there is two female Middle white pigs, and their names are Winnie and Wilbur

You will most likely find them sleeping, digging in mud, or looking for food. They are quite vocal members to the Farmyard Friends - so you will often hear them snorting around their enclousure!

About us

Scientific name: Sus scrofa domesticus

Middle white pig's are a rare breed listed as a priority species by the Rare Breed Survival Trust, making their presence at the park important for conservation. During the Second World War, Middle white pigs were faced with near-extinction and still is according to the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST).

Middle white pigs are known for their stocky build and can sows can grow up to around 200kg, their main characteristics include their white colouration across the body and their snub noses

The pigs are fed a mixture of specially formulated pellet which provides all the diet components they need, plus a bit of veg - they love carrots!

Middle White Pig Facts

 Middle white pigs are bred by crossing the Large White and Small white pigs - meaning they are the 'middle sized pig'
There are around 350 sows remaining, kept by around 80 breeders.
The average litter size for a Middle white pig is around 8 piglets
 
Their short, upturned noses makes them excellent foragers, allowing them to find food close to the ground without rooting up large areas!
