Tyra the lioness enjoys enrichment activity

We’ve all heard of letting the cat out of the bag. But what about when a lion is trying to get into one?

Tyra, one of Woburn Safari Park’s lionesses, had great fun when keepers placed a hessian sack into the lions enclosure as part of an enrichment activity.

The benefits of enrichment for the lions

The hessian sack was filled with straw and sprayed in perfume before being hidden in the enclosure by keepers, ready for the pride to find.

And once they found it, lionessTyra was keen to dive straight into the enrichment activity.

Intended to increase their physical activity and to introduce novel stimuli into their daily routines, simple tasks like this can also help the lions to fulfil their psychological needs, reduce stress and encourage their natural behaviour.
