Winnie joins the rookery at Sea Lion Beach

The Animal Encounters team are delighted to have welcomed an adorable new addition to the Californian sea lion family with the arrival of young female Winnie, born on 6th June.

Mum Kira is doing well and Winnie has been settling in with the other members of the rookery, including her big brother Gus who was born on exactly the same day back in 2017.

Winnie likes to spend most of the day alongside mum Kira sunbathing and napping on the waterfall area down in Sea Lion Beach. She has recently started going for a swim in the main pool while mum stays very close.

Sea Lion Pup Winnie

Senior keeper Louise Moody, said: “It’s really exciting to have another sea lion pup born, especially exactly a year to the day that we welcomed Gus to the Park. Sea lions have a specific breeding time so it isn’t unusual to have babies born around the same time each year, but never usually on exactly the same day!”

Winnie's arrival was just a few days prior to the devastating news that male sea lion Max had passed away. You can read more about Max here
