The Bedford Estates, LondonMeet the New Shetland Duo at Woburn!
Two Shetland ponies, Harry and Daisy, arrived at Farmyard Friends on December 12th, coming from Ashlyn's Wildlife Park. Since their arrival, the pair have been settling in and bonding with their new companions, Holly (a fellow Shetland pony) and Tasha (a donkey). Although Harry and Daisy are the smallest in the enclosure, don’t be fooled - these fully grown ponies.
The Newcomers
Harry is a confident little pony with a shaggy brown mane and an endless curiosity. He’s often seen exploring the enclosure, making friends with Holly and Tash, or following keepers around as they go about their tasks. During housing clean-ups, Harry sticks close by, keeping a watchful eye on what’s going on. And as if by fate, Harry seems particularly drawn to Keeper Harry, forming an instant bond as if he knew they shared the same name.
Daisy, on the other hand, is a bit more reserved but no less captivating. With her striking white coat, she displays elegance and is described as a “true Shetland mare," by Keeper Katie. While she tends to stick by Harry’s side, Daisy prefers to keep to herself when keepers are busy working. However, she has a cheeky streak and sometimes enjoys stepping in the way of the hardworking keepers.
Meeting the Residents
Harry and Daisy have joined long-time residents Holly and Tasha in their enclosure. Holly, at 32 years old, has taken an active interest in the newcomers and is often spotted trailing them out of curiosity. Meanwhile, 26-year-old Tasha is a bit more reserved, watching from a distance but occasionally venturing closer to interact with the duo.
Shetland Ponies: Small But Mighty
Shetland ponies are a small breed of pony, typically standing up to 42 inches tall, but they’re also some of the strongest members of the horse family. Known for their stocky, muscular bodies and thick bushy manes and tails, Shetlands adapt to their environment by growing a smooth coat in summer and a thick, double coat in winter to withstand harsh weather conditions.
