Woburn Safari Park - American Black Bear

Animal Facts - American Black Bear

Latin name Trichoglossus haematodus

Habitat

Green-naped lorikeets, like the one pictured above, can be found in Western New Guinea and the smaller islands surrounding Australia and New Guinea. Swainson’s lorikeets can be found in Eastern and South-Eastern Australia and Tasmania. They mostly live in forests and roost high in the trees, a favourite being the Eucalyptus tree.

Feeding

In the wild:
Pollen, nectar and fruit.

At Woburn Safari Park:
Chopped fruit and NEKTON (a commercially produced powder, consisting of bee pollen, fruit nectar, soya protein, vitamins and minerals, which is mixed with water.)

Interesting facts

  • Lorikeets have tiny bristles on the outside of their tongues and these bristles help them to collect the nectar and pollen from flowers.
  • All fruit fed to the lorikeets at Woburn has to be ‘top quality.’ It also has to be carefully washed, to avoid spreading infection from outside into the aviary.
  • Lorikeets are very sociable birds and spend most of their time on the move. In the wild, large flocks swarm noisily together over flowering trees, foraging amongst the blossom.
